Flowers for sun or shade

Match the plant to the light.

4 min read

Most flowering plants need plenty of sun, but there are good choices for shade too.

Light levels

  • Full sun: six or more hours of direct sun a day
  • Part sun or part shade: three to six hours
  • Shade: less than three hours of direct sun
  • Watch your spot through a day before planting

For shade

Impatiens, begonias, astilbe, hellebores and bleeding heart are popular choices for shadier spots.
