Mixing the three types gives color all season and a garden that comes back each year.
The difference
- Annuals grow, flower and die in one season, but bloom for months
- Perennials come back each year, often blooming for a few weeks
- Spring bulbs such as tulips and daffodils are planted in fall
- Summer bulbs and tubers such as dahlias are planted in spring and may need lifting in cold areas
A simple mix
Bulbs for spring, perennials for structure and annuals to fill gaps with color all summer.
